This article analyzes the relationship between institutional arrangements (budgetary institutional and electoral rules) and fiscal performance in Latin American and OECD countries. It examines the relationship between specific budgetary institutional arrangements and fiscal performance. The article finds that budgetary institutions play a significant role in terms of fiscal performance, with a stronger impact in Latin American than in OECD countries. Results highlight that the details of the institutional reforms matter in investigating the impact of budgetary institutions and that their performance varies according to regional specific characteristics.
